Arthroscopic Surgery in Mumbai

Not every joint problem needs a major operation. Arthroscopic surgery in Mumbai at Shree Hospitals offers patients a minimally invasive path to diagnosis and treatment through incisions the size of a keyhole and a recovery measured in days rather than months.

Whether the issue is in your knee, shoulder, hip, or ankle, our arthroscopy specialists use camera-guided techniques to see inside the joint, identify the problem precisely, and treat it all without the trauma of open surgery.

The result is less pain, less scarring, less time in hospital, and a faster return to the life you want to be living.

What is Arthroscopic Surgery?

Arthroscopy is a surgical technique that allows orthopaedic surgeons to examine and treat the inside of a joint using a thin camera called an arthroscope inserted through a small incision.

The camera transmits a real-time, magnified image of the joint interior to a screen in the operating theatre, giving the surgeon a level of visual clarity that far exceeds what is possible through an open approach.

Alongside the camera, micro-instruments are introduced through one or two additional small portals enabling the surgeon to perform cartilage repair, remove loose bodies, treat meniscus tears, release scar tissue, wash out joint inflammation, and reconstruct torn ligaments all through incisions that are typically less than 1 centimetre long.

Keyhole surgery of this type was once reserved for the knee. Today, at Shree Hospitals, arthroscopic techniques are routinely applied to the shoulder, hip, elbow, wrist, and ankle expanding the range of conditions that can be treated with minimal recovery time and surgical trauma.

For patients who have been told they need open surgery, arthroscopy is frequently a technically superior and far less disruptive alternative worth discussing.

Conditions Commonly Treated with Arthroscopy

  • Meniscal tears (repair or partial removal)
  • ACL and PCL ligament reconstruction
  • Rotator cuff tears in the shoulder
  • Hip labral tears and femoroacetabular impingement
  • Cartilage damage and loose body removal
  • Chronic joint inflammation from synovitis or synovial cysts

Is Arthroscopic Surgery Right for You?

  • Joint pain that has failed to respond to physiotherapy and injections
  • MRI or clinical findings suggesting internal joint pathology
  • Active individual seeking fastest return to sport or work
  • Desire for minimal scarring and shorter recovery time
  • Condition amenable to arthroscopic treatment (confirmed on imaging)
  • No contraindications to anaesthesia or tourniquet use

Advantages Over Open Surgery

  • Incisions under 1 centimetre versus 10 to 20 centimetre open cuts
  • Dramatically reduced hospital stay — most cases are day surgery
  • Significantly lower blood loss and post-operative pain
  • Faster return to daily activities and sport
  • Lower infection risk due to smaller wound surface
  • Superior visualisation of joint structures under magnification

Arthroscopic surgery reduces intraoperative blood loss by up to 80% compared to open procedures and most patients are walking within hours of their procedure.

Joint pain is a problem that deserves a precise diagnosis not a best guess. Arthroscopic surgery offers both the diagnosis and the treatment in a single, minimally invasive procedure. Find out if it is right for you.

Our Approach to Arthroscopic Surgery

The quality of an arthroscopic outcome depends entirely on what happens before the camera goes in. Our approach is built around thorough pre-operative assessment, anatomically precise portal placement, and a recovery plan that begins at the point of discharge.

24×7 Emergency Care

Detailed Imaging-Based Pre-Operative Planning

Every arthroscopic procedure at Shree Hospitals is preceded by a thorough MRI or ultrasound assessment, reviewed in conjunction with clinical findings. We do not perform diagnostic arthroscopy in place of imaging we use arthroscopy to treat confirmed pathology with precision.

Multi-Joint Arthroscopic Expertise

Our surgeons are trained in arthroscopic techniques across knee, shoulder, hip, elbow, and ankle joints not limited to a single anatomical area. This breadth of expertise is critical for patients with multi-joint or complex presentations who require a single specialist to manage their full care pathway.

Concurrent Pathology Treatment

One of the key advantages of arthroscopy is the ability to treat multiple pathologies in the same sitting. A patient with a meniscal tear and early cartilage damage, for example, can have both addressed simultaneously reducing total anaesthetic exposure, recovery time, and the psychological burden of multiple procedures.

Structured Post-Operative Recovery Protocol

Recovery protocols are procedure-specific and provided in writing on the day of surgery. Physiotherapy referrals are arranged before discharge. Weight-bearing instructions, activity restrictions, and progression milestones are communicated clearly so patients leave hospital knowing exactly what to do next.

Arthroscopic Treatments Available at Shree Hospitals

Arthroscopy is a surgical platform, not a single procedure. The following treatments are routinely performed arthroscopically at Shree Hospitals each delivering the same minimal-incision, rapid-recovery advantage

ACL Reconstruction

Arthroscopic ligament reconstruction using autograft tissue for complete stability restoration.

Rotator Cuff Repair

All-arthroscopic shoulder tendon repair with anchor fixation, minimal soft tissue disruption.

Meniscal Repair & Resection

Repair-first approach to meniscus treatment, preserving as much tissue as safely possible.

Cartilage Procedures

Microfracture, OATS (osteochondral autograft transfer), and ACI for cartilage repair in younger patients.

Step by Step: What Happens During Arthroscopic Surgery?

Step 1 — Pre-Operative Review & Anaesthetic Assessment

You arrive to the day surgery unit or ward. Your MRI and clinical notes are reviewed with the surgeon. The procedure, risks, and expectations are confirmed. An anaesthetic assessment is completed. The surgical site is marked and consent obtained. You are prepared for theatre — typically within 1 to 2 hours of arrival.

Step 2 — Anaesthesia & Positioning

You receive general or spinal anaesthesia. For knee arthroscopy, you are placed supine with the knee in a leg holder. For shoulder procedures, a beach-chair or lateral decubitus position is used. A tourniquet is applied for lower limb procedures. The site is cleaned and draped sterile.

Step 3 — Portal Placement, Diagnostic Survey & Intervention

Two or three small stab incisions (portals) are made. The arthroscope is introduced and a systematic survey of the entire joint is performed — inspecting cartilage, ligaments, menisci, synovium, and any loose bodies.

Findings are documented. Instruments are introduced through accessory portals to carry out the planned procedure: meniscus treatment, cartilage repair, ligament reconstruction, loose body removal, or synovectomy.

Step 4 — Wound Closure & Discharge

Portals are closed with single sutures or adhesive strips. A compressive bandage or shoulder sling is applied as appropriate. You are observed in recovery for 1 to 2 hours.

Most patients are discharged the same day with written aftercare instructions, physiotherapy referral, and a follow-up appointment arranged. Pain is typically well-controlled with oral analgesia.

Patient Questions About Arthroscopic Surgery

Is Arthroscopic Surgery Painful?

During the procedure, anaesthesia ensures you feel nothing. Post-operatively, portal-site discomfort and intra-articular swelling are the main sources of pain typically well-managed with oral anti-inflammatory medication and ice. Most patients describe post-arthroscopic knee pain as significantly less than they expected. Pain levels vary with procedure complexity: a simple meniscus treatment involves far less post-operative discomfort than a concurrent ligament reconstruction.

How Long Does Recovery Take After Arthroscopic Surgery?

It depends entirely on what was done inside the joint. A straightforward arthroscopy with loose body removal may allow return to normal activity within a week. A complex cartilage repair procedure may require non-weight-bearing for 6 weeks followed by a graduated rehab programme extending to 4 to 6 months. Your surgeon and physiotherapist will provide a personalised recovery timeline based on your specific procedure findings.

Can All Joint Problems Be Treated Arthroscopically?

Most, but not all. Some conditions severe joint inflammation with significant bone loss, complex fractures, or certain ligamentous injuries — are better addressed through open or semi-open approaches. Similarly, total joint replacement cannot be performed arthroscopically. However, the vast majority of soft tissue joint pathologies in the knee, shoulder, hip, and ankle are now routinely managed with keyhole surgery at Shree Hospitals.
