What is Total Knee Replacement (TKR)?
Total knee replacement is the most commonly performed major joint procedure in orthopaedic surgery and for good reason.
When knee osteoarthritis or other degenerative conditions destroy the cartilage lining the knee joint, bone begins rubbing against bone, causing pain that no amount of medication or physiotherapy can fully address.
TKR removes the damaged surfaces of the femur, tibia, and patella and replaces them with precisely engineered metal and polymer components a knee prosthesis designed to replicate the smooth, friction-free motion of a healthy knee.
At Shree Hospitals, total knee replacement is not approached as routine surgery. Each procedure begins with a detailed biomechanical assessment and imaging review, enabling our surgeons to select implant design, sizing, and alignment parameters specific to your joint.
The tibial implant, femoral component, and patellar button are fitted to work as a single, coordinated unit not just replace what is missing, but restore what a healthy knee actually feels like.
The decision to proceed with TKR is made collaboratively with the patient after exhausting conservative measures. When surgery is confirmed, our team ensures you understand every step from pre-admission preparation to discharge and beyond.

When Should You Consult an Orthopaedic Surgeon?
- Knee pain that persists through rest and medication
- Swelling that does not reduce between episodes
- Visible bow-legged or knock-kneed deformity
- Inability to fully straighten or bend the knee
- Pain that has progressively worsened over months
- Significant impact on sleep, work, or daily routine
Is This Treatment Right For You?
- Grade 3 or Grade 4 knee osteoarthritis confirmed on imaging
- Failure of non-surgical treatments over 6 or more months
- Age typically 55 and above, though younger patients may qualify
- Sufficient bone density to support implant fixation
- No active joint infection or uncontrolled systemic illness
- Patient committed to post-operative rehabilitation
Why Early Treatment Matters?
- Progressive cartilage loss accelerates with delay
- Compensatory gait patterns damage the hip and opposite knee
- Muscle wasting from inactivity complicates surgical recovery
- Earlier surgery preserves better bone stock for implant anchoring
- Patients who act sooner report better long-term outcomes
- Quality of life deteriorates significantly with untreated end-stage arthritis
Total knee replacement has one of the highest patient satisfaction rates in elective surgery over 90% of patients report significant pain relief and improved function within 6 months.
You do not have to choose between managing pain and getting your life back. Total knee replacement at Shree Hospitals offers both with surgical precision, proven implants, and a recovery programme built around you.
24×7 Emergency Care
Our Approach to Total Knee Replacement
Great surgical outcomes begin long before the incision. Our approach to TKR is structured around four principles: accurate pre-operative planning, technically precise bone preparation, optimal implant selection, and a recovery programme that begins on day one.
24×7 Emergency Care
Detailed Pre-Operative Assessment
Every patient undergoes full-length standing X-rays, mechanical axis measurement, and implant templating before surgery is scheduled. We assess the degree of deformity, ligament integrity, and bone quality to plan the exact procedure nothing is left to intraoperative improvisation.
Alignment-Focused Bone Preparation
Correct mechanical axis alignment is the single most important factor in TKR longevity. Our surgeons use navigation-assisted or robotic-arm guidance to ensure bone cuts achieve optimal implant positioning reducing wear, preventing instability, and extending implant life.
Implant Selection & Fixation
We use premium cemented and cementless knee prosthesis systems from globally validated manufacturers, selected based on individual patient anatomy, activity level, and bone quality. All implants carry minimum 15-year tracked clinical performance data.
Accelerated Rehabilitation from Day One
Physiotherapy begins within 24 hours of surgery. Our in-hospital rehab team works with every patient on range-of-motion exercises, weight-bearing progression, and safe discharge planning significantly shortening average length of stay without compromising outcomes.

Step by Step Process of Total Knee Replacement
Step 1 — Pre-Operative Planning & Medical Optimisation
Following your consultation, a series of investigations is arranged: standing long-leg X-rays for mechanical axis measurement, blood work, cardiac clearance, and anaesthetic review. Any modifiable risk factors blood pressure, blood sugar, BMI are optimised before surgery is scheduled. Implant templating is completed and your surgeon finalises the procedure plan.
Step 2 — Anaesthesia, Positioning & Tourniquet Application
On the day of surgery you receive general or spinal anaesthesia. The leg is positioned in a specialised leg holder that allows the knee to flex to 90 degrees during surgery. A pneumatic tourniquet is applied to the thigh to control blood loss. The surgical site is cleaned, draped, and an anterior midline incision is made to access the knee joint.
Step 3 — Bone Resection & Implant Placement
Using precision cutting guides or navigation, the surgeon removes the damaged surfaces from the distal femur, proximal tibia, and posterior patella. Trial implant components are placed and the knee is tested for range of motion, ligament balance, and alignment. Once confirmed correct, the final tibial implant, femoral component, and patellar button are fixed in place cemented or press-fit depending on your bone quality.
Step 4 —Wound Closure & Early Mobilisation
The wound is closed in layers, a drain placed, and a compressive dressing applied. Within 4 to 6 hours of returning to the ward, you will be assisted to stand. Formal physiotherapy begins the following morning targeting early knee flexion, quadriceps activation, and safe transfers to chair, toilet, and stairs before discharge.
Patient Questions About Total Knee Replacement
How Long Does a Total Knee Replacement Last?
Modern knee prosthesis designs have an excellent long-term track record. Clinical registry data shows that over 90% of primary TKR implants remain functional at 15 years post-surgery, and many last 20 years or more. Implant longevity depends on patient weight, activity level, implant design, and surgical technique all of which are carefully considered as part of our pre-operative planning.
What Is the Recovery Timeline After TKR Surgery?
Most patients walk with a frame within 24 hours and are discharged within 3 to 5 days. At 6 weeks, most daily activities including light walking and driving are typically resumed. Return to more demanding activities such as hiking or recreational sport usually occurs between 3 and 6 months. Full recovery, including complete resolution of swelling, can take up to 12 months.
Is Total Knee Replacement Better Than Partial Knee Replacement?
It depends entirely on the extent of disease. Knee arthroplasty in the partial form preserves more bone and native tissue, and recovery is often faster but it is only appropriate when arthritis is confined to one of the three knee compartments. TKR is the correct choice when all three compartments are affected, deformity is significant, or ligament integrity is compromised. Our surgeons will advise the right approach after a thorough clinical and imaging assessment.
