Thyroid Disorders Treatment in Mumbai

At Shree Hospitals, we provide complete and expert care for patients with all types of thyroid disorders including an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism), an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism), thyroid nodules, goitre, thyroiditis, and thyroid cancer. The thyroid gland regulates your metabolism, energy, weight, mood, heart rate, and reproductive health, which means when it stops working correctly, the effects are felt throughout the entire body. Our endocrinology team delivers accurate diagnosis and personalised treatment plans to restore your thyroid function and your quality of life.

Unexplained weight changes, persistent fatigue, feeling too cold or too hot, hair loss, palpitations, mood changes, and a swelling in the neck are warning signs of a possible thyroid disorder.

Our Approach In Managing Thyroid Disorders

At Shree Hospitals, we recognise that thyroid disorders are one of the most underdiagnosed and mismanaged conditions in India, particularly hypothyroidism in women. Symptoms like fatigue, weight gain, hair loss, and low mood are easy to attribute to stress or ageing, causing many patients to go years without a diagnosis. Our endocrinology team provides the specialist expertise needed to correctly diagnose, classify, and manage your thyroid condition so that you feel like yourself again.

  1. Accurate Thyroid Diagnosis and Complete Evaluation

Diagnosing a thyroid disorder correctly involves more than a single TSH test. Our specialists perform a comprehensive thyroid evaluation including detailed blood tests, thyroid ultrasound, and where indicated, a nuclear medicine thyroid scan to understand exactly what is wrong with your thyroid and determine the best treatment approach for your specific condition.

  • TSH, Free T3, and Free T4 Testing for Thyroid Function Assessment
  • Thyroid Antibody Testing (Anti-TPO, Anti-TG, TSH Receptor Antibodies)
  • High-Resolution Thyroid Ultrasound for Nodule and Goitre Evaluation
  • FNAC (Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology) for Suspicious Thyroid Nodules
  1. Hypothyroidism Treatment and Thyroid Hormone Replacement

Hypothyroidism means your thyroid is not producing enough thyroid hormone to meet your body's needs. The standard treatment is oral levothyroxine, but getting the dose exactly right is a process that requires careful monitoring and adjustment. Too little and your symptoms persist. Too much and you develop symptoms of an overactive thyroid. Our specialists monitor your thyroid levels and how you feel at every follow-up, not just your TSH number.

  • Personalised Levothyroxine Dosing Based on TSH, Symptoms, and Body Weight
  • Regular TSH Monitoring and Dose Adjustment Every 6 to 8 Weeks Initially
  • Combination T3 and T4 Therapy for Patients With Persistent Symptoms
  • Thyroid Management in Pregnancy Requiring Specialised Monitoring and Dosing
  1. Hyperthyroidism Treatment and Thyroid Activity Control

Hyperthyroidism means your thyroid is producing too much hormone, speeding up your metabolism and putting strain on your heart, bones, and muscles. Treatment options include antithyroid medications to reduce hormone production, radioactive iodine therapy to permanently reduce thyroid activity, or surgery to remove part or all of the thyroid. Our team helps you understand each option and recommends the most appropriate approach for your age, severity, and health situation.

  • Antithyroid Medications Including Carbimazole and Propylthiouracil
  • Radioactive Iodine (RAI) Therapy for Definitive Hyperthyroidism Treatment
  • Beta-Blockers for Symptom Control Including Heart Rate and Tremor
  • Surgical Thyroidectomy for Selected Cases or Large Goitres
  1. Thyroid Nodule and Goitre Evaluation

Thyroid nodules are very common and the vast majority are benign, but a small percentage can be cancerous and require further investigation. Our team uses high-resolution ultrasound and cytology to carefully evaluate every nodule and determine whether it needs close monitoring, medical treatment, or surgical removal. We do not over-treat nodules but we also do not miss the ones that matter.

  • Ultrasound Characterisation of Nodules Using TIRADS Classification
  • FNAC for Cytological Evaluation of Suspicious Nodules
  • Monitoring Protocol for Benign Nodules with Scheduled Follow-Up
  • Endocrine Surgery Referral for Nodules Requiring Surgical Removal
  1. Long-Term Thyroid Care and Patient Education

Thyroid disorders, particularly hypothyroidism and autoimmune thyroid disease, are lifelong conditions that require ongoing monitoring and treatment adjustments over time. Our team provides structured long-term follow-up care and empowers every patient with the knowledge they need to understand their condition, take their medication correctly, and recognise the signs of under or over-treatment between appointments.

  • 6-Monthly or Annual Thyroid Function Testing for Stable Patients
  • Medication Adjustment During Pregnancy, Menopause, and Ageing
  • Patient Education on Correct Medication Timing and Drug Interactions
  • Guidance on Diet, Exercise, and Lifestyle for Optimal Thyroid Health

Happy Patients & Their Case Stories

I had been gaining weight, losing hair, and feeling exhausted and depressed for nearly three years. I was told it was stress and given antidepressants that made no difference. When I came to Shree Hospitals, a simple blood test showed severely underactive thyroid with strongly positive antibodies. Six months on the right treatment and I feel completely transformed. I wish I had come sooner.

Mr. Madhav . P

My heart was racing, I was losing weight despite eating well, my hands would not stop trembling, and I was anxious all the time. Shree Hospitals diagnosed Graves disease causing my overactive thyroid, explained all three treatment options clearly, and helped me choose the one right for my situation. My thyroid levels have been normal for over a year and all my symptoms have gone completely.

Mr. Keshav , O

How To Identify Thyroid Disorders?

The thyroid gland is a small butterfly-shaped gland in your neck that produces hormones controlling virtually every aspect of your body's metabolism. When the thyroid produces too little hormone, a condition called hypothyroidism, your body's processes slow down. When it produces too much, a condition called hyperthyroidism, everything speeds up excessively.

Symptoms of hypothyroidism come on gradually and are easy to dismiss as signs of stress, ageing, or a busy lifestyle. They include persistent fatigue and low energy even after adequate sleep, unexplained weight gain despite no change in eating habits, feeling excessively cold, dry skin, thinning or falling hair, constipation, low mood or depression, a slow heart rate, poor concentration and memory, and in women, irregular or heavier-than-normal periods.

Symptoms of hyperthyroidism are generally more noticeable and come on faster. They include unexplained weight loss despite good or increased appetite, a rapid or irregular heartbeat, feeling hot and sweating excessively, anxiety, nervousness, or irritability, hand tremors, difficulty sleeping, more frequent bowel movements, and muscle weakness. A visible swelling in the neck called a goitre may also be present in both conditions.

Many thyroid conditions including Hashimoto thyroiditis, which is the most common cause of hypothyroidism in India, are autoimmune in nature and are significantly more common in women than in men. Thyroid disorders tend to run in families, so if a close family member has a thyroid condition, your risk of developing one is higher.

Both conditions are diagnosed with a simple blood test measuring TSH and thyroid hormone levels. If you are experiencing any combination of these symptoms, please do not ignore them or attribute them to stress. A thyroid blood test is simple, quick, and can make an enormous difference to your diagnosis and quality of life.

Treatments For Thyroid Disorders At Shree Hospitals

Thyroid disorder treatment in Mumbai at Shree Hospitals includes the full range of medical and surgical options for both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism, as well as specialist evaluation and management of thyroid nodules, goitre, thyroiditis, and thyroid cancer. Every treatment plan is tailored to the individual patient's thyroid type, severity, age, and personal health circumstances.

Thyroid Hormone Replacement Therapy (Levothyroxine)

Levothyroxine is the standard treatment for hypothyroidism and must be taken correctly on an empty stomach at the same time each day for maximum effectiveness. Our endocrinologists work carefully to find your optimal dose through regular monitoring and adjustment, ensuring your TSH and thyroid hormones are within the ideal range for your age and health status, not just within the broad laboratory reference range.

Antithyroid Medication and Hyperthyroidism Management

Carbimazole and propylthiouracil are the main antithyroid medications used to reduce excess thyroid hormone production. Our team monitors your thyroid levels and white blood count closely during antithyroid therapy, adjusts doses as your thyroid function improves, and discusses the most appropriate long-term treatment plan including radioactive iodine or surgery for patients who need definitive treatment.

Radioactive Iodine Therapy for Hyperthyroidism

Radioactive iodine is a highly effective and minimally invasive treatment for hyperthyroidism and certain thyroid cancers. The iodine is taken orally and is selectively absorbed by thyroid tissue, gradually reducing thyroid activity over several weeks to months. Our nuclear medicine team provides full RAI therapy with careful pre-treatment preparation and thorough post-treatment monitoring for every patient.

Thyroid Nodule Monitoring and FNAC Assessment

Not all thyroid nodules need treatment but all need proper evaluation. Our specialists use high-resolution ultrasound and TIRADS classification to assess every nodule and determine the appropriate next step, whether that is a simple follow-up scan, a fine needle aspiration biopsy for cytology, or surgical referral for nodules that cannot be cleared as benign on testing.

Important FAQs: Thyroid Disorders

What is the difference between hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism?

Hypothyroidism means the thyroid gland is underactive and producing too little thyroid hormone. This slows down your body's metabolism and causes symptoms like fatigue, weight gain, feeling cold, constipation, dry skin, hair thinning, and low mood. Hyperthyroidism means the thyroid is overactive and producing too much hormone.

Can hypothyroidism be cured permanently?

In most cases, hypothyroidism is a permanent condition that requires lifelong thyroid hormone replacement with levothyroxine. However, some temporary forms of hypothyroidism caused by thyroiditis, certain medications, or thyroid surgery may resolve once the underlying cause is addressed. For Hashimoto thyroiditis, which is the most common cause in India, the condition is lifelong but can be very well controlled with the right medication dose.

Is weight gain always a sign of thyroid problems?

Not necessarily. While hypothyroidism can cause weight gain, it is rarely the sole cause of significant obesity. Most thyroid-related weight gain is modest, typically 2 to 5 kilograms, and is largely due to fluid retention rather than fat accumulation. Treating hypothyroidism alone will not produce major weight loss in most patients without accompanying dietary and lifestyle changes.

Do I need to take thyroid medication forever?

For primary hypothyroidism and Hashimoto thyroiditis, yes, lifelong treatment with levothyroxine is typically necessary. For hyperthyroidism, the answer depends on the treatment chosen. Antithyroid medications are often given for 12 to 18 months in a block-and-replace or dose titration regimen, after which a proportion of patients achieve remission and can stop medications.

Is it safe to get pregnant with a thyroid disorder?

Yes, with proper management, women with thyroid disorders can have healthy pregnancies and healthy babies. However, thyroid disorders in pregnancy require very careful and specialised monitoring because the pregnancy itself changes thyroid function and the levothyroxine dose typically needs to be increased as soon as pregnancy is confirmed. Uncontrolled hypothyroidism in pregnancy is associated with miscarriage, preterm birth, low birth weight, and impaired neurodevelopment in the baby.

What foods should I eat or avoid if I have a thyroid problem?

For hypothyroidism patients, it is important to take levothyroxine medication correctly on an empty stomach and to avoid eating foods that interfere with its absorption such as calcium-rich foods, soy products, high-fibre foods, and coffee within one to two hours of taking the tablet. Cruciferous vegetables like cabbage and cauliflower are often unnecessarily avoided but are fine in moderate cooked quantities. For hyperthyroidism patients, reducing iodine intake by limiting seaweed, kelp, and excessive iodised salt may be helpful.

When should I see a thyroid specialist in Mumbai?

Book a consultation at Shree Hospitals if you are experiencing persistent and unexplained fatigue, weight changes, hair loss, mood disturbances, heart palpitations, or any combination of the symptoms described on this page, if your GP has found an abnormal TSH or thyroid hormone level on a routine blood test, if you have been on thyroid medication for some time but still do not feel well, if you have a thyroid nodule or swelling in your neck that needs evaluation, or if you are planning a pregnancy and have a known thyroid condition. Call 1800-268-4000 to book an appointment at our thyroid treatment centre in Mumbai India.
