What are Fertility Treatments including IUI and IVF?
Infertility is defined as the inability to conceive after 12 months of regular unprotected intercourse, or 6 months for women over 35. Assisted reproductive technology (ART) encompasses a range of medical treatments designed to help individuals and couples conceive. The two most commonly used methods are intrauterine insemination (IUI) and in vitro fertilisation (IVF).
IUI (Intrauterine Insemination) involves the direct placement of prepared sperm into the uterus at the time of ovulation, increasing the chance of fertilisation. It is a less invasive first-line treatment recommended for mild male factor infertility, unexplained infertility, and cervical factor infertility.
IVF (In Vitro Fertilisation) involves stimulating the ovaries to produce multiple eggs, retrieving those eggs, fertilising them with sperm in a laboratory, and transferring the resulting embryo into the uterus.
At Shree Hospitals, our fertility team conducts a thorough evaluation of both partners before recommending any treatment. We offer personalised treatment protocols, comprehensive hormonal monitoring, and emotional support throughout your entire fertility journey.

When Should You Consult a Fertility Specialist?
You should seek specialist evaluation if you:
- Are unable to conceive after 12 months of regular unprotected intercourse
- Have irregular or absent menstrual periods suggesting ovulation problems
- Have been diagnosed with PCOS or endometriosis affecting fertility
- Have a known or suspected male factor infertility such as low sperm count
- Have a previous history of miscarriage requiring fertility investigation
Early specialist assessment significantly improves your chances of a successful outcome.
Is Fertility Treatment Right for You?
Assisted reproductive treatment may be right for you if:
- You have been diagnosed with unexplained infertility after initial investigations
- You have mild male factor infertility where IUI is the recommended starting point
- Your fallopian tubes are blocked or severely damaged, requiring IVF
- You have previously undergone unsuccessful IUI cycles
- You wish to maximise your chances of conception with assisted reproductive technology
Our specialists will assess your individual situation and recommend the most appropriate treatment pathway.

Our Approach to Fertility Treatment
Our fertility team at Shree Hospitals takes a thorough, compassionate, and evidence-based approach to every couple seeking treatment.
We begin with a comprehensive evaluation of both partners, identify the specific cause of infertility, and design a personalised treatment plan that maximises your chances of conception while minimising physical and emotional stress.
24×7 Emergency Care
Comprehensive Fertility Evaluation
Both partners undergo a full fertility workup including blood hormone tests, semen analysis, ovarian reserve assessment, and pelvic imaging. This allows us to identify the exact cause of infertility and choose the most effective treatment pathway.
Personalised Treatment Protocols
Based on your diagnosis, age, and medical history, our specialists design customised IUI or IVF protocols including ovarian stimulation, monitoring, and timing to optimise follicle development and egg quality.
Advanced Embryology Laboratory Support
Our IVF laboratory uses the latest incubation, fertilisation, and embryo culture technology to maximise fertilisation rates and embryo quality. Detailed embryo assessment ensures the best-quality embryo is selected for transfer.
Emotional and Holistic Support Fertility treatment
Can be emotionally demanding. Our team provides dedicated counselling support, clear communication at every stage, and a compassionate environment that acknowledges the emotional journey alongside the clinical one.

Step by Step Process of Fertility Treatment
Step 1 - Initial Consultation and Fertility Assessment
Both partners attend an initial consultation where full medical and reproductive histories are taken. Blood tests including FSH, LH, AMH (ovarian reserve), and testosterone are arranged along with semen analysis, pelvic ultrasound, and fallopian tube assessment where indicated.
Step 2 - Diagnosis and Treatment Planning
Results are reviewed and the cause of infertility is identified. Your fertility specialist explains all available treatment options and recommends the most appropriate pathway, whether IUI or IVF. A detailed treatment calendar is provided.
Step 3 - Ovarian Stimulation and Monitoring
Hormone injections are used to stimulate follicle development. Regular ultrasound scans and blood tests monitor follicle growth and oestrogen levels. The stimulation protocol is adjusted to optimise response while minimising risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS).
Step 4 - IUI Procedure or Egg Retrieval for IVF For IUI, prepared sperm is directly introduced into the uterus through a thin catheter at ovulation. For IVF, eggs are retrieved under sedation using a transvaginal needle guided by ultrasound, then fertilised with sperm in the embryology laboratory.
Step 5 - Embryo Development and Transfer (IVF) For IVF, fertilised eggs develop into embryos over 3 to 5 days in the laboratory. The best-quality embryo is selected and transferred into the uterus through a simple catheter procedure, similar in discomfort level to a smear test.
Step 6 - Pregnancy Test and Follow-Up
A blood test measuring beta-hCG is performed approximately 14 days after embryo transfer or IUI. A positive result is followed up with an early pregnancy ultrasound. If the result is negative, your specialist reviews the cycle and discusses next steps with full emotional and clinical support.
Patient Questions About Hysterectomy
What is the difference between IUI and IVF?
IUI is a simpler, less invasive procedure where prepared sperm is placed directly into the uterus around the time of ovulation, allowing fertilisation to occur naturally inside the body. IVF is a more complex process where eggs are retrieved from the ovaries, fertilised with sperm in a laboratory, and the resulting embryo is transferred into the uterus. IVF has higher success rates per cycle but is more intensive. Your specialist will recommend the most appropriate option based on your individual diagnosis.
What are the chances of success with IUI or IVF?
IUI success rates are typically 10 to 20% per cycle depending on the underlying cause of infertility and the woman's age. IVF success rates range from 30 to 50% per cycle for women under 35 and decrease with increasing age. Your specialist will provide a realistic success estimate based on your individual profile, diagnosis, and ovarian reserve.
Is fertility treatment painful?
IUI is a quick, minimally uncomfortable procedure similar to a cervical smear test. IVF egg retrieval is performed under sedation so you will not feel pain during the procedure. Ovarian stimulation injections may cause mild discomfort, bloating, or mood changes. Our team provides comprehensive guidance on managing side effects throughout your treatment.
How many IUI or IVF cycles should I try?
Most specialists recommend trying up to 3 IUI cycles before considering IVF if IUI is unsuccessful. For IVF, 2 to 3 cycles are generally recommended before reassessing the treatment plan. The appropriate number of cycles depends on your age, diagnosis, response to treatment, and emotional readiness. Your fertility specialist will guide you through this decision with compassion and clinical evidence.
